My artwork references the human condition—the fact that we alter the surface of the planet in both strange and beautiful ways.

JAZZ AND THE SPOKEN WORD: TOM GEHRIG RECITES MALLARMÉ'S "A THROW OF THE DICE"

Tom Gehrig was invited to perform with The Jazz Beaus, a SF Bay Area jazz ensemble. The live performance was held at the Revolution Cafe in San Francisco. The composition of the piece showcased Gehrig reciting a portion of the poem, "A Throw Of The Dice", by Stéphane Mallarmé.
Mallarmé was a French symbolist poet, and his work influenced several revolutionary artistic schools of the early 20th century, such as Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, and Surrealism.

Mallarmé is one of Gehrig's most significant sources of inspiration. Evidence of this can be found throughout Gehrig's body of work through his intentional use of language and text placement woven into many of his multi-media paintings. The pieces, Principles of Illumination and As If, are two of many examples.
