Gallatin River Gallery's annual show, “EARTH & SKY XX”, also marks the gallery's 20th Anniversary in business in Big Sky, Montana. The show features diverse mediums from artists referencing the earth and sky. Works include paintings from Montana resident, Shawna Moore, and a multi-media oil painting by San Francisco Bay Area artist, Tom Gehrig. All artists showcased in the exhibit present contemporary perspectives that reflect the spirit and power of our natural world.
Tom Gehrig's work, Tracking a Weather Balloon in 4 Stages, was selected for the show. This large, vertical 4 panel composition depicts a weather balloon rising to reach a celestial mapped sky; or perhaps the weather balloon is descending to land near an illuminated rock formation. Could it be both?
Anchoring the piece is a diagram of three planetary surfaces; sandstone, conglomerate, and granite. The schematic references, "Principles of Geology: being an attempt to explain the former changes of the Earth's surface, by reference to causes now in operation", a book by the Scottish geologist Charles Lyell that was first published in 3 volumes from 1830–1833. Lyell used the theory of Uniformitarianism to describe how the Earth's surface was changing over time. Measuring 46" x 9 1/2", this stunning piece is infused with intrigue, offering viewers the freedom to navigate its beauty and meaning. |
